A microbe, or microorganism, is defined as a microscopic organism that may consist of a single cell (unicellular), clusters of cells, or more complex multicellular organisms. The exploration and understanding of these microorganisms fall under the domain of microbiology, a scientific field that traces its origins back to 1675 when Anton van Leeuwenhoek first identified microorganisms using a microscope he designed himself.
